IME

Independent Medical Examiner (IME)

An Independent Medical Examiner (IME) is a medical provider who serves the role of an objective evaluator for the purposes of providing an opinion on an injury or illness.

The Independent Medical Examiner is a general term that is used sometimes inter-changeably by the workers’ compensation system and the personal injury industry. An IME need not have any special certificates to perform this role, other than a designation to perform the function that is agreed upon by the parties. The Independent Medical Evaluator follows many of the same report formats used in the California state QME system, addressing such issues as medical causation, permanent and stationary status, and the need for further and ongoing care. A qualified IME is NOT required to demonstrate competency in AMA Guides impairment rating as part of the certification process, however, the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners does offer certification testing of Independent Medical Examiners. Upon successful passing of the exam, the medical provider is designated the additional certification of education known as a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME).
